Yu Ooka

Born in Osaka, Japan. In 2005, After studying at Koyo Consevatory in Kobe, Yu decided to move to Los Angeles to persue his career and experience different culture.
Yu played at many LA local live clubs where he was introduced to legendary Jazz pianist, Billy Mitchell and has been playing in the Billy Mitchell Group over 10 years.

Being exposed to many experienced artists has opened his heart to realize there is a natural groove within each groove and each player, there is “communication” amongst the musicians
and the music.

In 2007, “A.P.B.”, was formed and Yu was the lead guitarist.
The music is a mixed variety of genres including: Country, Pop, Ambient and Classical.  “A.P.B.” has won the ‘Best Performance’ prize at Hori Production Audition in the United States.

Yu is a leader of “Contemporary style of Japanese Folk Music” group, “Minyo Station“.
They feature Japanese traditional songs with different eastern arrangement.(Rock, R&B, Jazz, & Latin etc).
This Unique Fusion group became popular in Southern California area and started performing many renowned venues such as LACMA and Ford Amphitheatre etc.

Yu is also known as “Shamisen player”, who has been surving for traditional Japanese music and culture.(shamisen is a 3 string Japanese banjo.)
His teacher, “Sato Matsutoyo” is known as “the best Japanese folk singer and shamisen player” in Japan and her performance credits are in many movies including “Karate Kid 2”.

 Yu’s appearance was Blue Note in Osaka, Sedona Jazz on the Rock, the Music Center of Los Angeles, John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, Los Angeles County Museum of Art(LACMA), Asian Heritage Jazz Festival, MADCatfish Blues Festival, Levitt Pavillion, Nisei Week Coronation Ball, Nisei Week Closing Ceremony etc…

Besides performances, he attends many recording sessions.

神戸の音楽学校“甲陽音楽学院”では、土野裕、和田清茂、佐藤忠行等に師事。卒業後、ロサンゼルスに渡り、数ヶ月ハリウッドのMusicians Instituteにて、Allen Hinds, Jinshi Ozaki等に師事。



2013年9月にはピアニスト“パトリース ルーシェン”とのライブ演奏が全米ジャズラジオ88.1にて約2時間に渡り放送され好評を得る。

また、2008年に結成した、民謡とジャズのコラボレーションバンド“Minyo Station”のリーダーでもあり、日系コミュニティーを中心にサンフランシスコ、ロサンゼルス、ラスべガスを中心に活動。2012年2月には1stアルバム“Cultural Twist”をリリース。

2011年には、ロサンゼルス日系コミュニティー最大のイベント“二世ウィーク”のクロージングお盆では、30年ぶりに 生演奏を復活させ、話題となる。
一方では民謡三味線奏者としては、映画”Karate Kid 2″でも知られる“佐藤松豊”氏に師事、名取“佐藤松豊遊”を襲名している。

2016年には、初のリーダーアルバム”Vegas Drive”を”Yu”名義で発表。

2017年夏、大岡遊グループ with バーバラ・モリソンにて、日本ツアーを行い、関西、関東合計5箇所ソールドアウトにて成功を収める。
